Tips To Help New Moms Find Time For Themselves

It is really important for your optimum ability to take care of your newborn and family to find time for yourself. Some people call it recharging their batteries, others call it downtime. Whatever you call it, it really does matter. And no, it isn’t selfish!

Get help from others

You might think you have plenty of time to scrub the toilets and wash all the dishes, but if you’re spending all your downtime on it, it’s not benefiting you. If you have offers of help, accept them. Let others take over some of the chores–I promise the world won’t stop if the dishes aren’t put exactly where you like them. If you can afford it, hire a temporary maid service. You’ll feel better with some extra rest!

Sleep when baby sleeps

Of these tips to help new Moms find time for themselves, I’ve heard this one the most. But it’s definitely easier said than done. When baby sleeps,  you think about the laundry you could toss into the washer or the sink you could scrub. Instead, set times for those things–a certain day for example–and don’t let them take over all of baby’s nap times. When baby is a newborn, it’s extra important for you to get sleep when he does, so you can recover from labor and delivery and recharge.

Let baby’s father help out

It’s hard for some new moms to let baby’s father take over, but I promise he {and you} will survive. Even if you just get out to the store by yourself, that’s time for you that really helps you re-energize and remember that you’re still your own person. If you breastfeed, pump extra milk when you can and freeze it so Dad can easily feed baby with no worries.

Get up a little earlier than baby

Once baby has an established sleep schedule, consider waking up 20-30 minutes earlier than baby to squeeze in some time for yourself. This is one of the best tips for new moms, because it really isn’t hard to do once you have recovered from childbirth. Just think what you could do with those minutes! Enjoy a quiet house, get in a quick workout, or spend time meditating.
