Young children have the least ability to control their emotions. The concept of consequences is also a difficult one for them to grasp. When your young child becomes upset by something, blowing bubbles is a great distraction. Grab the bubbles and take your child to a new spot where you don’t mind them blowing bubbles {such as outside}. As you blow bubbles with your child, watch the bubbles float away. Show your child how the bubbles float calmly away, and say something simple like “Goodbye, mad!” or “Goodbye, sad!” It may seem ridiculous to an adult, but this simple mindfulness practice helps your child connect the bubbles with letting go of unhappy feelings. It might take a few times for your child to understand it, but it won’t be long before he will ask you to blow bubbles when he’s feeling stressed.

Blowing Bubbles For Older Children

With an older child who more readily understands the concepts of emotions and consequences, use blowing bubbles as a relaxation technique. Relaxation leads to and assists with mindfulness practice. Have your child slow their breathing as they blow out, and watch how the bubbles expand and grow more easily when breathing is slow and peaceful. Teach your child how slowing their breathing helps when they feel stressed or anxious, and have them visualize the bubbles expanding and floating as they do so.

When a stressful situation happens, such as childhood friendship drama, your child will reach a point where physically blowing bubbles is no longer necessary. Visualizing the act of blowing bubbles may be enough to help your child calm himself.
